  • Shilling for money. What we’ve been doing since episode one: literally here just shilling for the money. And you know what? When you have as much money as we do because of 400 podcast episodes, then you’re gonna have it in 401k. And maybe if you ever leave your job where you’re shilling for money, you’re gonna want to roll that over into an IRA. And that’s where Capitalize comes in. It’s a free service that will find your 401k and help you roll it into an IRA of your choice so you can have control over your money. Because when you’re shilling for money, like the Frugal Friends, you want to know where all of yours is. That’s frugalfriendspodcast.com/capitalize.

Do you guys have a lot in common?

Jen and Jill shared how they have both similarities and differences. They are not identical but complement each other well. They highlighted that their different perspectives and working styles contribute to the success of the podcast. Overall, they emphasized the importance of embracing their differences and finding a balance in their partnership.

How do you convert a non-frugal spouse from a family who throws money at problems?

Jen and Jill discussed how important it is to understand and respect each other’s views and values. They talked about having honest talks about what’s important to us, how we spend money, and where we want to be in the future. They suggested focusing on what we have in common and finding fun ways to tackle money issues together. They made it clear that being on the same page about our values and goals is key to making our financial dreams happen.

⭐
Nonsense
Listened to a 40 minute podcast and I’m not sure anything was actually said.

⭐
Too much “valley girl” talk
I want to like this; listened to a good number. But all the valley girl-isms make me cringe. Too many “Yeah’s” and uptalk. They make it seem like the hosts don’t know what they’re talking about.

⭐
Like a PSL
Lost my interest, felt more and more like the same thing over and over, more like PSL, not very minimalist if you ask me.

What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs finding their way?

Jen emphasizes the importance of seizing opportunities to fill voids with your unique perspective, delivering your message tailored to your audience in your authentic voice. On the other hand, Jill advises aspiring entrepreneurs to narrow their focus, begin with a solid foundation, finding a “Jen”, make sure you’re ready to leave your day job, and make money before you think you can.

Most memorable bill of the week?

For Jen, the most memorable BOTW was when a listener requested to move up her submission to honor her terminally ill father. This act of honoring her father was profoundly meaningful. To Jill, one of the most recent one was Goldie’s surprise BOTW. Other memorable bills include those shared by children and random anecdotes from listeners.

⭐
Frivolous stupidity
Started listening to a few podcasts trying to find one with content… settled into the episode on the Kon Mari method and was floored at how vapid this 4 star podcast was. A full twelve minutes into the podcast before they actually started talking about the book only for one of them to “confess” she hadn’t read it. What the hey?! Great research from experts. All along the way there was a lot of dumb giggling at nothing. Narrated with a irritating valley girl accent and intonation. Immediately culled this from my library. If you’re trying to be frugal, value your time and don’t waste it on poorly researched, irritatingly narrated, dumb, low byte rate meme, podcast. I note that many of the reviews say this “hilarious”…maybe…if you like gutter humor. But absolutely nothing in here regarding the reason you actually started listening.

⭐
Nope
Their robotic sore throat sounding voices are so annoying!

⭐
Nauseating
I’ve never heard so much passive aggressiveness in a podcast. I do a Ramsey hybrid with the Money Guys. These two are sickening. The constant reference to Ramsey as an “elderly white man”. He’s 63. These two really offer next to nothing as far as any insightful information for personal financial planning. They’ve obviously been shunned by most of the financial community and the constant digs about “guilt and shame” are exhausting. Not sure who follows these two chicks, but most episodes are a waste of time.

What's the best thing you've heard from someone about Frugal Friends?

The best feedback about Frugal Friends has been the numerous instances in the Facebook group where listeners express how the episodes have transformed their lives and perspectives on finances. Many have credited the podcast as the primary motivator for getting their finances in order, with some even sharing stories of significant debt payoff or decisions influenced by the show. Jen and Jill find it deeply rewarding when listeners describe the podcast as relatable, down-to-earth, and enjoyable, feeling like they’re listening to friends. Knowing they’re achieving their goal of being both helpful and entertaining is immensely gratifying.

Fantastic Frugal Friends!

I discovered the Frugal Friends two years ago and have yet to miss an episode since. I've also listened to many of their back episodes. Though I work in financial services and I'm financially savvier than the average person, I find that Jen and Jill's practical approach to personal finance with actionable tips and resources strikes the perfect balance for me. I'm continually surprised by how much new information they are able to distill and consolidate in a single episode. Their outreach over multiple media channels is also helpful, particularly the friend letter and challenges such as January's no spend challenge on Instagram.

I also enjoy their banter and truly do feel like I'm listening to two friends that I've known for years. Maybe that's because I'm also from southeastern Pennsylvania and feel the connection to some of Jill's idiosyncrasies and common phrases like "oh, my word", which reminds me of my grandmother 😆. I look forward to every episode and the upcoming book!
