21 Things Frugal People Don’t Buy in 2026 – EP 632

Listen on Your Favorite Podcast Player

Frugal people have figured out how to protect their savings without falling for marketing that sells an identity instead of real value. Jen and Jill dives into the “manufactured convenience,” subscription creep, AI upsells, and performative wellness that frugal people ARE NOT falling for this year!

We define frugality not as spending the least amount possible but as being a good steward of all your resources.

Overpriced Conveniences We Keep Buying

Because our everyday life is already tiring as it is, we feel so drawn to convenience to ease our life even just for a little bit. Unfortunately, companies take advantage of this in the form of AI subscriptions, daily “little treats,” viral Amazon gadgets, and multiple streaming services that are built around clever marketing. Jen and Jill unpack why these purchases feel so worth it in the moment and how they can add up without bringing lasting value.

They also look at hidden costs behind monthly car payments, products that lock you into ongoing subscriptions, extended warranties on inexpensive items, bulk groceries that go to waste, pre-cut fruit with premium price tags, and one-time outfits for special occasions

Things That Promise a Better Life More Than They Deliver

Another internal battle that keeps us from saving more is the person that we hope to become. Like trying an expert level hobby before trying a beginner version, vague supplements to be healthy, and trendy water bottles. Jen and Jill explore how modern marketing sells us an ideal lifestyle instead of lasting value. It’s easy to mistake self-improvement for shopping, especially when every purchase promises a better version of you.

They also unpack the hidden costs of Amazon Prime, “emergency” Target runs, vacation upgrades, fear-based wellness products, buy-now-pay-later purchases, short-lived furniture, and buying for your fantasy self instead of your real life.

What’s something you’re grateful for not buying anymore?

Jen is grateful she doesn’t buy Starbucks anymore! She now supports more local coffee shops or makes her own. And for Jill it’s the accessories and jewelries that just clutter her room.

I absolutely loved this book! I have been listening to their podcast for years and as a millennial I appreciate their values based spending approach. This book was extremely relatable and it really makes you think about what you are spending. There aren’t quick fixes to improving your finances and they provide information that will have a large impact over time. “Buy What You Love Without Going Broke” is the best financial book I have read so far!
