Hey Friend!
Do you ever just feel like no matter how you cut your spending to align with your values, there’s still not enough room in the budget to cover all your goals?
Sometimes values-based spending means cutting back in places you don’t value as much to free up space for what you value more highly.
Not sure how to find what you value? Check out Jen’s latest YouTube video (her first in over 2 years!) on How to Find What You Value.
While there’s no deprivation in values-based spending it does require sacrifice.
Let’s try to break down this concept:
Values-based spending is not a means to an end. It’s a journey to getting what you love most.
As we practice values-based spending, it might require our lifestyles to change. We might take on new hobbies, shift our routines, change our relationships.
And this might feel uncomfortable, but investing our resources into those things we truly love will be worth it.
Embracing and valuing the journey can get us closer to our goals.
When we believe that difficult changes are worth making and we devote time and energy towards those changes, we are more likely to fall in love with the journey.
Here’s a few steps you can take to enjoy the journey, even when all your hopes for your money aren’t possible all at once:
-
✅ Set specific, meaningful goals that resonate with you personally, rather than what you think others expect from you.
-
✍️ Prioritize the goals that make most sense to work towards in this specific season of life. A helpful question to ask is: What 1 goal will make other goals easier or unnecessary in the future? …and celebrate the small wins along the way!
-
🍃 Practice mindfulness by engaging fully in the task at hand, focusing on the present moment and finding satisfaction in the process rather than just the outcome.

On Tuesday, Jen and Jill outlined a fall budget plan (beyond the obvious PSLs) in Ep 438 What to Budget For This Fall.
Fun fact, I (Misti) forced my friends to join my virtual book club called “Self Help Yourself,” but we never know what to read. So I’m STOKED to hear some fresh recs in today’s episode: Frugal Friends Book Club: 4 Self Help Books to Read This Fall (Ep 439).
Listen wherever you get podcasts and let us know what you thought of the episode over on our latest Instagram post!
✅ Read: Deep dive on motivation by reading Dan Pink’s Drive.
✅ Watch: This Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) guided tapping video Release Stress and Welcome Transformation. EFT tapping is a little different, but hear me out… I (Misti) think it’s a great alternative to meditation for those of us with “spicy brains” who had a visceral reaction to the idea of practicing mindfulness (IYKYK).
✅ Do: Sign up for our friend Chloe’s FREE investing course. We’ve had her on the pod and love the simple, DIY approach she takes to investing. You’ll learn so much (and probably have fun doing it :))
✅ Meal Prep: These spicy wontons with chili oil (aka dumplings) that went viral, for a key hack that makes bulk prep easier. Better yet, they’re easy to freeze! 🌶️
Have fun getting uncomfortable this weekend!
