Social media has become the modern-day opium therefore – do not disturb mode on! Today, Jen and Jill share their experiences on and off social media, how both have changed our lives, and how you can do your own social media detox in an effort to consume it more intentionally.

Social media is not the enemy but we could all use a detox from it.

Your Mind on Social Media is More Influenceable.

Jen and Jill explain how social media creates an addictive cycle of consuming short-term dopamine hits, making it harder for our brains to think critically about what we see and causing us to mistake what we see for what we truly want. They also discuss how this can disrupt motivation, making it more difficult to engage in challenging or meaningful tasks.

To test these ideas, they looked at what happens when people spend less time on social media. Studies show that reducing social media use can improve well-being, with participants reporting greater happiness, less loneliness, and higher overall life satisfaction.

Three Step Social Media Detox

A simple three-step social media detox starts by defining what you want more of in your life, rather than focusing on using social media less. Next, remove easy access by deleting social media apps and logging out of websites to reduce mindless scrolling. Finally, replace the habit with meaningful activities such as walking, reading, journaling, or cooking to make the change sustainable.

In the process of detoxing, Jen and Jill remind us to expect withdrawal. This is because our brain is used to constant stimulation and dopamine. But it doesn’t mean you’re missing out, it just means you’re engaging differently.

What’s your ongoing relationship with social media?

Jen specifically focuses on asking Jill how she balances her time on social media and she says she only does Instagram when in the toilet or at lunch and she only scrolls until she laughs.
