Self-care is supposed to make you less tired, yet every “self-care routine” we see on social media has 18 exhausting steps. Its normalization has come at a cost for some of us. So today, we’re exposing the marketing disguised as self-care and what you can actually do to take care of yourself, from a licensed mental health professional.

Self-care should not make us broke. Self-care should not set us back with our mental health. Self-care should not make us feel disconnected from our purchases.

Jen and Jill emphasize that self-care should not exhaust you. Self-care starts with understanding what makes you tick, what makes you come alive, and what helps when you’re overwhelmed, stressed, or in a funk. However, social media trends tell us we need 10 skin care routine steps to feel good. Which is exactly a perfect opportunity for an influencer to do a brand deal, make an affiliate sale, do free promo to shill for a free product, capitalize on a viral trend.

And slowly it will feel like a chore and will exhaust you. Because the more products you have, the longer self care takes and for those of us who don’t have a lot of time it increases the barrier to getting self care. Therefore, they are advocates of going back to the basics.

Using Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs for the Real Self Care

Jen and Jill says looking at spending through the hierarchy of needs can help us understand what we’re really trying to solve. We can ask ourselves if our physical needs like sleep, food, and water are met, whether we feel safe and secure in our work, health, or finances, and if we’re seeking love, belonging, or a boost in self-esteem.

Sometimes a rough week makes us want to stop by a store and call it “self-care,” but that purchase may actually be filling a deeper need like control, connection, or confidence. When we recognize the real need behind the spending, we can find better ways to meet it, often without spending money at all.

What’s a self-care habit you’re trying to be more mindful about?

Jen is walking and doing a 30-minute Pilates session with a gallon of water to set herself up for a good day. Meanwhile Jill found a routine that works for her and helps stack her healthy habits.
