21 Spending Habits That Are Quietly Keeping You Broke – EP 602

Listen on Your Favorite Podcast Player

Warning: this episode might expose a few spending habits we’re all guilty of. The takes are spicy and the questions are thought-provoking, but the goal is simple: help you keep more of your money. Today, Jen and Jill break down 21 everyday habits that could be secretly draining your paycheck.

There are all sorts of ways to make meaning of our things without spending money.

The Cost of Convenience Culture

When our comfort zone is on the line, we sometimes forget how much it’s costing us. Jill says this is exactly where companies take advantage of our love for convenience and capitalize on it and make it even easier for us to impulse buy. Meanwhile, Jen emphasizes the need for creativity. Instead of always replacing or buying something new, tap into your inner creativity and see what you can repair, reuse, or repurpose.

The two of them throw out a bunch of things to think about so you can check whether your spending still aligns with your values and notice the habits that might quietly be keeping you broke.

When Spending Becomes Emotional

Jen says we breed discontent by comparing what we have to what others have. That mindset can hurt our finances, because many purchases come from feelings rather than needs like boosting confidence, celebrating wins, rewarding a hard week, matching with friends or influencers, or creating the illusion of progress.

Over time, comparison and impulse spending can pull us away from spending in line with our values. That’s why Jill emphasizes that if something starts to feel like an obligation, flag it right away.

Which one of these hit the hardest for you?

Jill is guilty of buying in bulk because she sometimes buys things she’s never bought before but she swears she’s learning now. For Jen, she’s guilty about not making the call and she’s been procrastinating it.

Thanks so Much for Listening!

Thanks so much for listening. We love love love reading your kind reviews of our book Buy What You Love Without Going Broke and we especially loved this one from:

Buy What You Love Without Going Broke isn’t just about budgeting—it’s about transforming your spending into values-based spending. The authors encourage readers to spend all of their resources well: money, time, physical space, and energy. Instead of focusing on restriction or shame, they guide you toward intentional, values-aligned choices.

What I loved most is the shift from guilt to curiosity. Rather than asking, “Why am I so bad with money?” the book helps you ask, “What is this purchase trying to give me?” That mindset feels so much more freeing and empowering.

There are so many practical tips throughout, but unlike other financial “systems” I’ve tried, this one feels sustainable. It’s less about rigid rules and more about aligning your spending with what truly matters to you.
