Real Stories From Frugal Friends

Jen and Jill read stories submitted through the mega survey—stories about where listeners have struggled the most and where they need a word from a friend. From clutter and hobbies to family spending, food, and friendships, they walk through real situations shared by listeners. For each story, Jen and Jill offer practical ideas and takeaways you can bring with you if you find yourself relating to it.

They also speak to Frugal Friends who are on the journey of frugality but struggle to stay consistent. For both of them, budgeting shouldn’t feel like forensic accounting where every single thing has to be tracked. There are different ways to approach it, and it all depends on what works for you. Find the approach that fits, and stick with that one.

Behind-the-Scenes of Frugal Friends

One question Jen and Jill get asked a lot is whether they ever argue. Today, they reveal that, yes, they do have disagreements from time to time—but it’s just normal people being different. Jill says what has kept the podcast going for eight years is that they’re both straightforward and honest with each other, for better or worse. They further talk about how contents are put into episodes and some behind the scenes that listeners don’t get to hear about!

What’s one habit or mindset shift that consistently helps people stick with their financial goals long‑term, even when motivation dips or life gets busy?

For Jill, it’s about automating accounts into investment accounts so it happens in the background without much effort. Jen’s mindset, however, is that goal achievement is not all-or-nothing. Taking two steps forward and one step back is still progress.

Thanks so much for listening. We love love love reading your kind reviews of our book Buy What You Love Without Going Broke and we especially loved this one from:

✰✰✰✰✰

I received this book at part of an ARC (but I had already preordered it 😀) I’m a big frugal friends fan. I’ve been listening to the podcast for years now. This book is an easy to read beginners guide to getting good with money. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to get better with money.

The book covers a lot of different topics. Readers come away with a good foundation. I enjoy Jen and Jill’s very personal story telling and advice. Reading their book is just like listening to the podcast, like you’re hanging out with your besties trying to give you a little bit of financial advice.
