40 Unsexy Frugal Living Tips That Actually Work – EP 562

Listen on Your Favorite Podcast Player

Let’s be honest, the internet is full of “frugal living tips” that sound great until you try them and realize they either save you thirty-seven cents or feel like a part-time job. These are not those tips. They may be the unsexy ones but they are the ones that actually helped us pay off over $100,000 of debt.

The more time you spend making money, the less time you have to spend money.

Effective Frugal Living Tips

There are 40 frugal tips that Jen and Jill went through and each one of them are proven to be an effective way to actually save you money and help you pay off debt. Unlike the usual frugal living tips that feel like a chore, these focus on simple, values-based habits and small systems that bring ease, freedom, and awareness on how you handle money in the past, present, and future.

Action Steps to Get Started

They suggested not only tips but action steps to make it happen. This includes pausing before spending, knowing where your money goes, and aligning it with what actually brings value or joy. These tips teach you to question habits, align choices with values, and find satisfaction outside of spending.

Examples of this are using household checklists, unsubscribing from emails that don’t matter anymore, or keeping an opportunity cost note to know what this purchase is taking from your goals.  Their favorite one is automating saving money through a replacement fund so you won’t stress when things like tires, tech, shoes, or glasses need replacing.

An unsexy frugal habit you’ll never give up?

Jen loves the library, it’s the pillar of the community. She won’t give this up. While Jill’s is limiting food waste, if there’s any leftover in the fridge, she will EAT it.

Bill of The Week

Thanks Tarah for sharing your bill about a bidet for $10 because of Rakuten shoulda been $151!

If i could give this book 6 stars i would. It’s the first finance book that actually resonates with me! I was introduced to this book by the Sounds Like A Cult podcast Dave Ramsay episode and I can’t stress enough it’s the best book on personal finance I’ve ever read as someone who enjoys spending and didn’t feel like Dave Ramsay was a good fit for me. I’m walking away with a handful of practical psychological and tangible challenges to try and it felt so based in present day reality in a world where everything is really expensive and money is hard. I feel like I need to share this with all millennials who are trying to make it comfortably in a 2025 economy.
