Think money troubles go away when you win the lottery?
We can report: They don’t!
We had the opportunity to sit down with Joni, a lottery winner with a new lease on life and some boundary issues with her adult children.

Thanks to our sponsor, Capitalize, you too can make smarter decisions with your money. Like not letting an old 401(k) sit around, untouched. Old employers can switch 401(k) providers without you knowing, which could end up costing you in the long run.
Instead, let Capitalize help you not only find, but also roll over your old 401(k) for free (seriously, free)! They make the whole process super simple. If you have an old 401(k) sitting around, or you’re not sure, let Capitalize do the work and start your free rollover today. **
🚧 Savings Hack: Build Your Boundaries
After talking with Joni, a key concept stood out that we think applies to all of us. And that’s how to determine what you will and won’t spend on. Here’s a few tips:
1. Set a “Giving Budget”. If you’re often the go-to person for covering group dinners, gifting generously, or loaning money, try capping what you’re willing to give.
Set a monthly or annual budget just for this, and stick to it. Boundaries ≠ selfish—they help you give without resentment.
2. Use “Not in My Spending Plan” as Your Default. It’s a magic phrase. Whether it’s a friend’s bachelorette trip, a kid’s fundraiser, or a tempting sale, you can always come back to: “That’s not in my spending plan right now.”
It’s honest, clear, and gets easier with practice.
3. Say Yes—Strategically. Not all spending is bad! But choose where you want to say yes. Maybe you’ll cover your best friend’s coffee once a month, but skip the $9 matcha you don’t even like.
A well-placed “yes” is way more powerful when you’ve said a few smart “noes.”
4. Save Where It Matters. One of the easiest ways to stick to your boundaries—especially when sales are everywhere—is to shop with intention.
The truth? You don’t need to be a lottery winner to start setting money boundaries.
You just need a plan—and maybe this spending intervention episode to remind you that it’s totally okay to protect your peace and your pockets.

See ya,
Misti
