This Level of Overconsumption is Organized Hoarding | Unhinged Hauls – EP 581

Listen on Your Favorite Podcast Player

Who is actually using three big shampoos in a month, or sitting down to organize and use all those coupons? Today, we’re unpacking what’s really going on with stockpile videos, why these videos are so strangely compelling, and how extreme overconsumption online can slowly make overconsumption feel normal for the rest of us.

There’s a reality to what’s actually needed in order to do the things that bring us joy.

Why Stockpile Contents Gets to Us

Jen and Jill react to videos where content creators show off their stockpiles—from bathroom essentials to extreme coupon hauls. At first, it looks aesthetic, dreamy, and even ideal. But at the end of the day, Jen says it’s just overconsumption of things you don’t actually need in that much quantity.

Jill explains that seeing so much stuff can make us feel like we’re missing something, even when we’re not. This kind of content shows buying levels that are way more than most people need and can quietly push us to want more. It’s not done on purpose, it’s psychological. And if we don’t realize that, it’s easy to get pulled into it.

How to Break this Pressure

Jen first suggests defining your ‘enough levels’. This allows letting your mind have a boundary of how much is enough so that you don’t overconsume more than you need. Jill guarantees we already have what we need inside our home so she challenges us to use what we already have. She also recommends being aware of ‘normalized excess’ and start asking whether an item is something you genuinely love or if it just feels appealing because it looks good when organized or because you’ve been influenced by stockpile content.

What’s something you used to hoard but not anymore?

Cheese for Jill (Jen thinks it’s trinkets). And for Jen, candles have always been a big thing for her.
