Do you also take 10 minutes of your time to take personality quizzes? While it’s fun and really a great way to know more about ourselves, marketers have also realized that. In this episode we’re going to talk about identity, how it’s used in marketing, and what you can do to build a stronger sense of self so marketing is less effective on you.

You can’t buy who you want to be. You don’t need to buy things to make your life look a certain way to impress other people.

How identity marketing works

Jill explains identity as something that gives us our sense of self. It is shaped by both external and internal factors like personality, culture, relationships, experiences, beliefs, gender, and other influences that shape who we are and how we see ourselves. However, Jen says that when we have a hard time finding our identity, marketers can step in and capitalize on that disconnect.

They explain the many ways marketers tap into our identity through products and a sense of belonging, especially when we feel uncertain. They highlight that it’s important to reflect on whether something truly aligns with who we are.

How do we build a better sense of self?

Jen and Jill emphasize that this is a lifelong journey. There may be times when we have a strong sense of who we are, but there can still be areas we want to change — making identity ever-changing and always evolving. Taking time for intentional reflection is a necessary step. Doing a 90-day transaction inventory is especially helpful for this, as it allows you to reassess which expenses have not been aligning with your values and which ones have in recent weeks.

I loved the emphasis on values. Not everybody is going to have identical budgets and that's okay. I also appreciated the reality that if it isn't simple, you won't stick to it. Very well put together and bonus points for being author narrated.
