At some point, many of us will face a reality we didn’t plan for: helping our parents financially. Whether it’s covering bills, helping with housing, or stepping into a caregiving role, almost no one is talking about how to prepare for it. In this episode, Jen and Jill share their personal experiences and break down what you need to know before it becomes a crisis.
This is not a crisis to solve but it’s also not something to ignore. It's something to plan for.

A Simple Reality Check of What We’ll Have to Face
Jen and Jill break down the data that brings us back to reality. People are living longer, but longer lives also mean higher healthcare costs, bigger retirement savings goals, and more years to fund without the pension security many previous generations had. At the same time, smaller families often mean fewer relatives to share caregiving and financial responsibilities.
This means caregiving can also come with a financial cost that’s easy to underestimate. Beyond out-of-pocket expenses, many people lose valuable time and income, making it harder to save, invest, and build wealth. That’s why it’s important to start these conversations early instead of assuming everything will work itself out, overcommitting financially out of guilt, or misunderstanding what programs like Medicare actually cover.
What Can We Do NOW
- Step 1: Start the Conversation Early: Talk about future care, finances, and preferences before a crisis happens.
- Step 2: Understand Their Financial Picture: Know their income, savings, debt, and insurance without prying.
- Step 3: Define Your Boundaries: Decide what you can realistically give without sacrificing your own future.
- Step 4: Learn the Systems: Understand Medicare, Medicaid, and long-term care so you don’t overpay.
- Step 5: Start Planning. Get key legal and financial documents in place before they’re needed.
What have you done recently and what do you need to do next to prepare for care?
Jen is potentially moving her mom into their rental house and the next thing she needs to do is update POA. Meanwhile, Jill is on her ongoing financial conversations and her next step is also working on POA.
