4 Things Influencers Have Normalized (& we STILL Overconsume!) – EP 583

Listen on Your Favorite Podcast Player

It’s normal for influencers because they make money out of it, but we don’t! These influencers have normalized outrageous spending, yet we still fall for it. So in this episode, Jen and Jill reveal four things that have become normal that we still fall for and how we can be creative ourselves.

There are good things to be celebrated about life but in those good things, there's always a reason to overspend and this is where the radical middle comes important.

Overconsumption on Food

Food is one of the biggest day-to-day expenses we deal with. So it’s no surprise that choosing convenience like takeout, delivery, or drive-thru has become totally normal. Jen and Jill remind us that these people don’t care about your future, your financial security, or your peace of mind. Influencers push this hard because it benefits them.

Overconsumption on Travel

Travel is one of the most popular goals people have, and the whole YOLO mindset has caused some real damage to people’s finances. Jen says that influencers have made it seem like you’re not living life to the fullest unless you’re constantly traveling but that’s just not true. Therefore, Jill emphasizes that it’s okay to travel, just not over-travel.

Overconsumption on “Treats”

We all love a little treat, but once it becomes a habit, it’s not really a treat anymore. Over time, we’ve also started thinking treats always have to cost money. Jen and Jill remind us that a treat doesn’t have to cost anything. It can be something as simple as walking 10,000 steps, breathing in fresh air, or enjoying a good home-cooked meal.

Overconsumption of seasons

We’ve gone from keeping one small heirloom to redecorating the entire house every time the season changes. Jen says it’s become too much, while Jill reminds us that it’s okay to mark the change of a season creatively but it doesn’t mean we need a bunch of new things every time.

What’s a 5th category you could’ve personally added to the list?

Clothes for Jill and fitness stuff for Jen.

I’ve been a frugal friend since the pandemic and have enjoyed the takes of Jen and Jill! I liked their vulnerability and was able to connect with Jill when she grapples with how the decisions in her twenties have affected her financial realities in her thirties! (I am a teacher and chose to live out my twenties working low wage jobs abroad instead of investing in my Roth IRA!) I am happy to be more informed but like Jill have owned my decisions. Jen and Jill’s philosophy on frugal living and values based spending is something I’ll take with me to the grave!
