“Made in Italy” when it’s really made in China? Appreciating the value of luxury is an art in itself, so choosing the real thing is a valid preference but at what cost? Today, we’re pulling back the curtain on what luxury really means, exploring the rise of dupe culture, and asking whether it’s truly helping us save on quality or simply giving us a new way to justify cheap overconsumption.
When you don't know who you are, people can sell that to you.

Does Luxury Still Mean Quality?
Jill touches on the economic concept of Lipstick Effect Theory that suggests during an economic downturn, consumers increase spending on small, inexpensive luxury items like lipstick while cutting back on larger purchases. This happens because these smaller treats provide a psychological boost and a sense of indulgence without a major financial outlay.
They mentioned this because Jen has noticed a wave of people on social media dissecting fabrics, leather, and even stitching on high-end products. It highlights a growing reality that we can no longer assume that a high price tag guarantees quality. Even worse, if something turns out to be poorly made, getting compensated isn’t as easy as brands make it seem.
The Cost of Luxury Dupes in the Long Run
According to Jill, many news reports, articles, and studies are revealing that a large number of products are manufactured in factories far from where brands claim they are. Jen adds that while dupes aren’t identical in quality to the original versions, they’re often much closer to what you’d find in stores today, making direct comparisons difficult.
Because of this, Jill emphasizes that intentionality matters. Are we choosing something for its long-term timelessness, or are we more focused on the trend, the brand name, and the social image attached to it? Because it can look like frugality on the surface, but sometimes it’s just consumption in disguise, buying for the label or the pressure to present a certain way rather than for true value.
What’s your version of luxury?
Jill leans in on simple luxuries, small pleasures, and little treats in everyday life. While Jen’s is her iced coffee in the afternoon that she makes in her nice glass.
