NOT EVERYTHING IS ON SALE THIS BLACK FRIDAY. It’s dopamine. Sales are through the roof but what we don’t see are the recycled discounts, fake price drops, and psychological traps designed to make you spend more. And we’re talking all about it on today’s episode.
Brains love saving money by buying stuff, more than we love saving money by not buying something.

Black Friday Today Has Evolved
Jen remembers when Black Friday used to be fun and full of good deals, but now it feels more like a trap to make people spend more. Jill also points out how it’s turned into something beyond just deals ever since Black Friday sales started showing up as early as November. And people are still buying into it, with data showing that overall spending on Black Friday continues to rise even faster than the general rate of inflation.
How Black Friday Scams Us
Jen and Jill talk about how social media lures us into Black Friday sales with everyone around hauling and showing off what they’ve bought. They show clips of shoppers comparing original prices to so-called Black Friday deals, only to find no difference at all or, worse, prices that are actually higher but made to look like discounts.
Jen and Jill are appalled by this because even though we’re capable of thinking critically, these sales still draw us in since they’re everywhere and companies know exactly how to take advantage of that. So they suggest limiting your exposure to sales or using tools like CamelCamelCamel, Honey, or Capital One Shopping to check an item’s price history and see if it’s truly on sale and if you really even need it.
What did you buy last black friday?
Jill bought a pipe bender as they were in renovation but returned it. While Jen scored some embroidery practice supplies that were actually on a legit sale, plus some sippy cups for Atlas and a door hook!
