Step 1: Research what the best quality actually is.
Jen wanted to look for the longest-lasting workout clothes for someone who runs and strength trains for a girl with a curvy figure. So she first used ChatGPT, which asked whether she should prioritize affordability or quality, regardless of price. Once she decided to focus on quality, ChatGPT narrowed it down to Lululemon and Born Primitive. Since there’s no Born Primitive store nearby, she headed to Lululemon.
Step 2: Research what the best items are for you
Jen felt overwhelmed researching online, so she went to the bougie Lululemon, hoping for better help, and thanks to Kim, she did. She asked the right questions and helped Jen find gear that fit her runner-lifter lifestyle.
Then at Madewell, Jen tried the curvy fit. Hearing the difference from an associate while trying things on confirmed what she knew, but it still helped. A good reminder: the internet’s helpful, but it can’t replace someone who sees you and actually knows what they’re doing.
Step 3: Get your sizes
Jen knew trying things in-store was essential. Once she found a good fit, she snapped a pic of the tag to remember details like fabric and rise, since those vary across brands. She also took photos of pieces she didn’t like for future reference. Before leaving, she checked the clearance rack to spot typical markdowns and made a note to browse Lululemon’s “We Made Too Much” section online.
Step 4: Find them secondhand
Jen found the Lululemon leggings she liked and searched for them secondhand on Google, aiming to spend $20-$40. After saving some good options on Poshmark and checking eBay, she moved on to Madewell. She loved a pair of $88 shorts but decided to try secondhand first.
After 30 days, she found the same shorts on multiple sites, with Depop offering the best price. Madewell’s secondhand section had even better deals than ThredUp, so she made that her go-to.
What's your favorite fashion item to thrift?
Jen is jeans because they’re just so expensive. While Jill’s favorite thing to thrift is quality jewelry.
