How far would you go to save money? Because some people out there are taking frugality to a whole new and extreme level! In this episode, Jen and Jill explore wild, unhinged, and sometimes downright risky ways people try to save money and the consequences they might not see coming.
You don’t have to do the extreme thing. But this can inspire you to get creative with what you are doing.

It’s the perfect amount of ‘hinged’ for those of us who want to just track our money from our phones but don’t want to spend money on a budgeting app. It’s beautiful, has all the tabs you need to budget monthly, allows you to see your financial picture at a glance, and even has perks like an opportunity cost calculator!
Health Hazards of Extremes
Without proper research, Jen and Jill warn about the risks of DIY-ing everything especially when it involves chemicals that could mix in dangerous ways over time. Jill points out it’s not just your health at risk. If you go to weather extremes (like no AC or heat), your home could end up with moisture issues or mold and those repairs cost way more than what you were trying to save in the first place.
Time and Energy is Money
Jen and Jill listened to a bunch of people on TikTok going to wild extremes to save money. While everyone’s situation is different, they remind us that doing the most can waste time and energy if it’s not actually worth it. Just because you’re putting in effort doesn’t mean it’s costing less, in fact, it might be costing you more.
While they appreciate how people can do a lot to save money and understand that being stuck doesn’t feel good all the time, they are always an advocate for finding the radical middle.
This is a safe space! What’s the most unhinged (or embarrassing) thing you’ve done to save money?
Jill took a risk and bought a wedding dress from an online shop but it turned out to be a fail. Jen tried renovating their RV, but it didn’t go as planned either.

Refreshing read
Lovely book by Jen & Jill. Really love their podcast and this book was a refreshing take on values-based spending. I appreciate their approach to shame free questioning of analyzing our own actions through a psychological lens and coming back to living your values. Great read for someone looking for a fresh take on money!
