What Defines as a WASTE of Money

Jen emphasized that if you buy something that you value, it’s not a waste of money. And not because it’s wasteful for someone, it’s for you too. Waste, in the context of this episode, is something that you don’t use, not utilized, or under utilized.

17 Things That is a WASTE of Money

Jen and Jill touched on all the things that we think are worth it but ends up in waste. Think groceries we don’t eat, impulse buys we regret, makeup that expires before we use it, clothes that sit with tags still on, or those “zombie” subscriptions we forget to cancel. When you add it all up, that quiet waste can look like a dream vacation or even a few months of rent.

It doesn’t stop there because our hobbies, habits, wants, appliances, and even our pets all play a role. Like no-show event tickets, gym memberships we barely use, books collecting dust, or takeout we don’t finish. It’s all money we spent but never really enjoyed, and that’s exactly what they mean by wasted money.

What’s something you’ve wasted money on recently?

Jen forgot to cancel a credit card and had to pay the $150 fee…again. Meanwhile, Jill lost her keys so she had to replace them and it felt like a waste for her.

I’ve gone through phases in my life where I’m more frugal/thrifty than others. /b>

I hit the thrift shops HARD in high school, for example, and only recently rediscovered the thrill. I also had a Dave Ramsey phase. And lately, I’ve gone down the “buy nothing” rabbit hole. Jen and Jill speak to all of these different parts of me so clearly, and use all the best lessons learned from each phase to create a holistic new lifestyle that I’m excited about: values-based spending

This is a great read — it’s conversational and educational all at once, and requires just the right amount of self-reflection. I’m definitely “embracing my season” and saying “no” more, thanks to these gals.
